Beverly CAN! 2010
Briscoe Middle School's winning "Castle o' Cans" Sculpture on display at the Windover property at 134 Rantoul Street.
Kurt Anderson, a Beverly dad and 5th grade teacher at North Beverly Elementary School, came up with an idea to help fill the shelves at Beverly Bootstraps' food pantry with a program based on CANstruction. CANstruction is an event sponsored by professional architects who build 3D structures out of canned goods in communities across America and then the canned goods are donated to local food pantries. Kurt wanted to do a similar event on a local level so he enlisted the help of community activists Cheryl Rand and Julie DeSilva, Beverly Main Streets and Beverly Bootstraps Community Services . Together, we have created "Beverly CAN! 2010."
Eleven teams have now created sculptures across Beverly. Click here to see the map showing what the teams are and where the sculptures are located. They are on public display until Friday, May 14. On the 15th, the teams will dismantle their sculptures and deliver the canned goods to Beverly Bootstraps.
As each team started to design their sculpture, we called on the expertise of 3 architects to help the teams with stability and building ideas. We are so appreciative of the pro-bono services of Joe Zelloe of Zelloe + Weaver Architects and Jeff Tucker and Shelby Littlefield of Siemasko & Verbridge for their time, ideas and guidance!
Three judges (Stacy Thomas-Vickory, Dick Barger and Mike Cahill) made the rounds and identified 3 standout sculptures:
1st place: Briscoe Student Council - "Castle of Caring"
2nd place: The Team That CAN - "CANine House"
3rd place: North Beverly Elementary School - "Can o' Cans"
Here are pictures of all the sculptures. We hope you get a chance to see them!
